Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has revealed that the government has reduced the minimum age for university admissions from 18 to 16 years.

In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), the Federal Ministry of Education declared, “FG reverts tertiary admission age to 16! Dr. Tunji Alausa announces the reversal, citing provisions for gifted students & focus on quality education.”

This adjustment permits students who satisfy the academic requirements to apply to universities and other higher education institutions at the age of 16 instead of 18.

According to reports, Dr. Alausa conveyed this development during his inaugural press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday.

He clarified that the previous age threshold of 18 was based on the framework of Nigeria’s National Policy on Education but will no longer be applied.
